Maintenance, Packing and the Gear Check


  MAINTENANCE

Main Canopy

  Pilot chute handle secure?
  Pilot chute fabric crisp and seams intact?
  Is the pin smooth, free of burrs and securely attached to bridle?
  Is the "Kill Line" pilot chute collapsing system in good condition?
  Is the top gromment on the deployment bag in good condition?
  Stitches holding stow band loops in good condition?
  Is the pilot chute attachment point to canopy secure?
  No damage to lines? (Steering lines at cascades and brake locking loops)
  No damage to slider fabric?
  Are slider gromments in good condition?
  No corroded or cracked metal connector links?
  Are "Slinks" assembled correctly and in good condition?
  Is there any rust on rings or other riser hardware?

Brake and Steering System

  Is there corrosion on keeper ring?
  Is stitching and webbing in good condition?
  Are the elastic keeper loops in good condition?
  Is the velcro on toggles in good condition (does it still stick)?
  Are the toggles securely attached?

Harness and Container

  Is there any damage to fabric or broken stitches?
  Does ALL velcro still stick properly and securely?
  Are gromments in good condition (not deformed)?
  Pull cutaway handle and wipe the cable clean.
  Is the reserve ripcord handle swag (ball on the end of cable) secure?
  Is the pilot chute pouch in good condition?
  Replace main closing loop. (make a few extra)
  Is the reserve closing loop worn? (consult your rigger if it is)

  PACKING

  Brakes stowed?
  Lines straight and no twists?
  Keep ALL lines in the center of canopy throughout pack job.
  Slider all the way up and in correct position?
  Are rubber bands in good condition and the correct size?
  Are the line stows the correct length and tight?
  Is there enough line slack between the "D" bag and risers?
  Is the closing loop the correct length and in good condition?
  Is the washer present at knot of closing loop?
  Is the "Kill Line" pilot chute cocked properly?
  Is there slack in bridle above the closing pin?
  Is the pilot chute folded properly (as per manufacturer's instructions)?

  GEAR CHECK

Reserve

  Is AAD turned ON? (Check It!)
  Is the pin in place? (Check It!)
  Is the closing loop in good condition? (Check It!)
  Is the RSL routed correctly? (Check It!)
  Is the seal and thread intact? (Check It!)
  Does the ripcord move freely through housing? (Check It!)

Main

  Is the main pin seated in closing loop?
  Is the "Kill Line" pilot chute cocked? (Check It!)
  Is the pilot chute bridle routed correctly? (Check It!)
  Is the closing loop in good condition?
  Is the pilot chute in the pouch securely? (Check It!)
  Is the pilot chute handle accessible? (Check It!)

3-Ring Release

  Are the rings free of corrosion? (Check!)
  Is there ONLY ONE ring through another? (Check It!)
  Is the loop through the smallest ring only? (Check It!)
  Are both loops in good condition? (Check It!)
  Does the loop go through smallest ring, then riser, then gromment at
      end of cable housing, then cable goes through the loop? (Check It!)

Harness and Altimeter

  Is the chest strap threaded correctly and tight? (Check It!)
  Is cutaway handle and reserve ripcord in view and accessible? (Check!)
  Are leg straps and harness NOT twisted? (Check It!)
  Are leg straps threaded correctly through hardware and tight? (Check!)
  Is all excess webbing stowed? (Check It!)
  Is the altimeter zeroed? (Check It!)
  Is audible altimeter zeroed/set? (Check It!)

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT ANY COMPONENT OF YOUR RIG... DO NOT JUMP IT!!!!!
CONSULT YOUR RIGGER FIRST... IT WILL BE TOO LATE WHEN YOU ARE FALLING AT 120 MILES PER HOUR!!!
